Swarm Community Call, 30 July – Recap

July’s Swarm Community Call centered on the work shaping the next phase of development. From Bee 2.8.1 and ongoing protocol hardening to evolving research priorities and an independent Rust implementation of a Swarm node, the discussion reflected a common theme: making Swarm more resilient, easier to maintain and improve, and better prepared for the next wave of builders.

Core Development: Focused on Building a More Robust Network

With Bee 2.8.1 released, development has already shifted to the next set of protocol improvements.

Elad emphasized that the core team is working to make the network more robust and reduce friction during updates.

One immediate priority is the Hive protocol, where peer discovery is being refined to reduce unnecessary network traffic and increase efficiency. PullSync is undergoing further hardening to improve synchronization reliability, while security work continues across several parts of the Bee codebase.

The team is also expanding its simulation and testing infrastructure. New tools are being developed to reproduce complex network conditions, latency, and synchronization edge cases more reliably, giving developers greater confidence before changes reach production.

Streaming remains another active area of development, with work underway to support Swarm’s long-term vision for decentralized media and large-scale content delivery.

Perhaps one of the most practical improvements under development is backward compatibility between protocol versions. Rather than requiring every node operator to upgrade immediately after a protocol change, the goal is to allow newer and older Bee versions to communicate wherever possible. This would make rolling upgrades smoother and reduce disruption across the network.

Research Priorities Shift Toward Usability

Callum outlined a deliberate reprioritization of the Research team’s work toward immediate network viability and near-term use cases.

Recent efforts have gone beyond individual proposals to the way research work itself is organized. With a growing number of active initiatives, priorities are being set around features that directly support network usability and upcoming applications.

Recent attention has shifted toward incentive edge cases, ACT optimizations, and the protocol improvements needed to support streaming at scale. While work on the tokenomics roadmap continues, some longer-term economic features have temporarily taken a back seat as the team focuses on infrastructure that can deliver immediate impact.

Price predictability remains another active research topic. Current discussions explore approaches such as subscription-style pricing for postage stamps, stronger data availability guarantees, and other mechanisms aimed at making storage costs easier for developers to reason about.

The team invited the community to contribute to the discussion around a potential “Swarm homecoming” to Ethereum Mainnet.

Community Talk: Vertex Brings Client Diversity to Swarm

The community spotlight featured mfw78, who introduced Vertex, an independent implementation of a Swarm node written in Rust.

Rather than extending the existing Bee codebase, Vertex is a clean implementation of the Swarm protocol, designed to interoperate with the live network while exploring different architectural approaches.

Vertex is intended to do more than provide another node implementation. Today, nearly every Swarm node runs Bee in Go. While that has helped the network mature, reliance on a single implementation introduces systemic risk. Drawing on the Ethereum Foundation’s emphasis on client diversity, Vertex aims to strengthen the network by independently validating assumptions, uncovering edge cases, and giving developers another way to build with Swarm.

Rather than keeping every component inside the node itself, Vertex is built on top of Nectar, a separate Rust project that contains Swarm’s core primitives, including chunks, proofs, and BMT. This modular structure allows the foundational components to develop independently while Vertex focuses on protocol handling and node functionality. The project targets multiple environments, including browsers via WebAssembly, embedded devices, and traditional server deployments.

During the demonstration, Vertex retrieved large files directly in the browser and showcased a peer-scoring system that continuously evaluates neighboring nodes based on reliability and protocol behavior. The project also plans to support additional networking transports such as WebTransport and WebRTC, reducing the networking complexity involved in running nodes outside traditional data center environments.

Vertex also provides a platform for experimentation. Built-in simulation tools allow developers to model latency, network partitions, and failure scenarios, while ongoing design work explores new approaches to manifests, key-value storage, and Swarm’s redistribution mechanisms. These ideas remain exploratory, but they show how an independent implementation can test alternatives without tying that experimentation directly to the main Bee client.
